Internet Explorer Flaw Could Expose Personal Data - 2005-12-05 A security researcher in Israel, Matan Gillon, has reportedly discovered a flaw in Internet Explorer (IE) which allows hackers to access personal information through Google Desktop. The problem, Gillon said, is a glitch in the way the Microsoft browser processes CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) rules, which are guidelines that set common styles across multiple websites. Gillon reportedly set up a website that, when viewed in IE from a computer with Google Desktop installed, would activate the Google Desktop search tool to find items matching the query 'password'. Microsoft and Google security officials are investigating the issue, and the problem appears to be in IE, not Google Desktop. This means that hackers could probably use the IE flaw to access other programmes which contain personal information, such as personal tax software. IE is so far the only web browser that Gillon has found to be vulnerable to this type of attack; he found Firefox and Opera browers specifically invulnerable. Gillon suggested using one of those web browsers or disabling Java Script in IE to avoid these potential attacks.
