Ireland to put 1901, 1911 Censuses Online - 2005-12-06
Under an agreement between Ireland's and Canada's respective archive offices, Ireland’s 1901 and 1911 censuses will be made available for free on the internet, the AFP reported today. The censuses are expected to be of interest to an estimated 70 million people worldwide who claim Irish ancestry.
Canada was active in the deal because 13 per cent of Canada's population claim Irish ancestry, and genealogical study has proven popular in Canada, with the websites for Canada's 1901 and 1906 censuses receiving an average of 41,182 site hits per month.
The 1911 Dublin census, which represents the first phase of project, will be available online in December 2006, with the whole project estimated to take about three years to complete. The records will detail the age, sex, marital status, occupation and county and country of birth for every person in Ireland at the time.
